In Texas at least, the vast majority of CWD positives come from breeding farms/game ranches that sell cervids to other locations to hunt/increase their herds. Something like 80% of all positives come from game ranches or places w a high fenced boundary (game fence - you can tell a game breeding facility by their fences, typically 10-15’ high when the surrounding properties will only have a couple strands of barbed wire 3-4’ off the ground on some old salt cedar posts.) Its in 30 of the 254 counties in Texas as of early 2024 IIRC. It only took three years to get from the Hueco Mountains near El Paso, to Bexar County/San Antonio in the south of Texas. Three fucking years.

Being a Texan, even though i do not hunt, i know a lot of fellas who fancy themselves as hunters. A lot of them go on canned hunts, at the places most likely to see a CWD positive herd. The TPWD states that while the chance of crossover to humans is low it is also NOT ZERO.

How long did it take those unlucky sods who contracted CJD/mad cow to show Symptoms and then die? Its a literal waiting game. We have no clue how long it takes for the proteins to misfold to the point of symptoms showing in white tail and muleys, just that it averages around 40-50 months to die once symptoms show. Ive never cared for venison in any amount, and ive never fed it to my children, but i know plenty of avid hunters who do feed it to their kids, neighbors, etc. How long until little Timmy exhibits symptoms because Papa fed Timmy venison? I grew up sorta close to the place where the plant will end up.

The area gets its water from surface sources; Lake Corpus Christi in Mathis Tx ( Nueces River dammed by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in the 1930s IIRC) Choke Canyon near Three Rivers Tx (dammed portion of the Frio River before it meets the Nueces; former ranch land owned by one of Corpus’ good old boys who got a honey of a deal on 50 acres of basically swamp lands) and the Mary Rhodes Pipeline (she was a well liked mayor in Corpus once upon a time) which pulls water from Lake Texana. Choke Canyon and Lake Corpus are currently sitting at a combined capacity of around 16-17%. There is so little water that they are considering DRAINING CHOKE CAYON INTO LAKE CORPUS CHRISTI.

The city just recently had TCEQ permits approved for the first saltwater desal plant in Texas. There are other desal plants in Texas but they use brackish water which is a much lower salt content. They intend to discharge back into the hypersaline estuaries and backwater bays which are a breeding ground for some of the most diverse saltwater nurseries along rhe entire texas coast. Corpus Christi has shot itself in the foot multiple times; it gas sold out its water capacity to industry like Flint Hills which is owned by the mother fucking Kochs, places like TEPCO which produce pvc products, CITGO, etc.

The desal plant is supposed to produce something like 30 million gallons per day at full boogie. Of that, 8 will go to Tesla right off the fucking bat. The fat lot of it is currently being split up amongst multiple industrial shitholes looking to upgrade or expand into a state with lax environmental protections, and into a specific city that really doesnt give a fuck about its residents but will whore irself out to industry. The water that the citizens need to drink is siphoned away to be used by corporations owned by business men to line their pockets with.

Corpus uses somewhere around 90-95 million gallons daily, of which some estimates are as high as 75 million gallons going to industrial uses alone.

Its another one of those things that people overlook; a tomato is a tomato is a tomato. Until they have one, and then realize what they’ve been missing out on. My mother grows tomatoes, peppers, and loofa squash every year, and has since i was a baby. I picked it up from her around the time my kiddos were toddlers and maybe my kids will pick it up from me when they get old enough.

Tomatoes can be finicky. Certain varieties make me wanna stomp on my hat, and other varieties i can just toss in a hole in the sand, forget about them, and theyll just go bonkers producing fruit.

I usually end up giving about half of them away to a couple from Paraguay who live two doors down and grow maybe six or eight different variety of bananas. Theyve been trying to talk me into canning and preserving what i dont eat, but my mind has decided that it requires actual work, and im not having that shit. I like our current arrangement, i give them tomatoes and they give me bananas.

I dont agree with this. Grocery store tomatoes are the way they are due to needing a tough skin to withstand mechanical picking processes, long storage times, exposure to ethylene gas, long transport times, etc. its not really because of a green ring around the stem of a tomato. Tomaotes dont ripen that way. Green shoulders have a well defined cause, like nutrient deficiency or wilt virus.

Yeah a homegrown versus store bought is just an unfair competition.

Honestly, grocery store tomatoes are shit. A homegrown tomato is one of my favorite things on the planet. I grow them in my backyard so i can eat them right off the vine. Theres green ones, red ones, pink ones, purple ones, yeller ones, etc.
