  • The big difference to western countries is that there was a meaningful geopolitical choice on the ballot: A BRICS nation defending its sovereignty or becoming a comprador-ran puppet like Argentina. That’s not comparable to people in the imperial core getting to pick between diet hitlerism and diet strasserism. It was terrifying to see how one LatAm government after the other fell to the US-backed fascists, i am relieved to see that a nation as big as Brazil has bucked that trend.

  • yeah has this changed?

It has to some degree since the community has become less dominated by white cis gay men. Coming out as gay doesn’t have the impact it used to have for visibility unless you’re a football pro or smth. OTOH, queer communities are increasingly aware of the risks coming out at the wrong time can have for vulnerable members of the community that would be at risk of physical violence, homelesness etc. after a forced outing. Ending up on the street because your phobic parents threw you out is something that happens, especially in the US, but i also know cases from Germany. There’s also the risk of being threatened with conversion therapy and for trans folks living with their parents it can mean that they jeopardize being able to start or continue HRT in secret etc. And for trans folks, a lot of us nowadays wait with coming out until they’re a good deal into their physical transition so they avoid that hypervisibility phase that comes from going out with the dress and five o clock shadow combo. I just rawdogged that with the power of orange concealing powder, i’m stubborn like that, but i always understood it’s a valid strategy to just wait longer with that kind of stuff. And a lot of my friends are just stealth in day to day life. When we pass, it’s pretty normal that we do not tell every cissie we’re trans because that means we get hatecrimed and procedurally discriminated against a lot less. I’m also aware that local outreach programs for queer refugees usually have strong privacy protection measures for a variety of reasons. Straight people need to understand that being unouted is frequently an understandable safety measure and it’s not because we are “ashamed of our dark secret” or however the straights like to imagine it, it’s because you straights frequently are an active threat to our wellbeing or even our lifes when you know we’re queer.

Now none of that applies to Lindsey Graham. He was a grown cis man, he was financially secure, in the last years of his political career you could make a grift out of being a conservative token gay and besides that from all i’ve heard he was one of those glass closet cases where everybody knew he was queer anway. And i think it wouldn’t be too useful to focus too much on the forced outing part here because of these differences in the conditions he was living under to those of at-risk unouted queer people. He’s been de facto outed ages ago, it was one of the first things i learned about him as somebody who isn’t a USian, this isn’t about that.

My problem with this is the whole liberal Trump is gay for Putin mindset behind these attacks. You say it doesn’t strike you as that, but this is the transphobes from TYT we’re talking about, this is a talking point for mainstream Democrats that Hunter Biden has gone off about, i buy it that you do not want to situate it in that kind of context but they absolutely do. And in general i gotta say it just doesn’t feel the same when straight people try to dunk on a guy like him. When i hear gay men throw shade on Lindsey Graham, when i joke about Alice Weidel or KKKontraPointSS, it just hits differently, at least most of the time. Because we can do that in a way that does not use the pull of systemic homophobia, lesbophobia and transmisogyny to add weight to our punches. Because we are passing judgement on a problematic piece of shit from our own community. Because we understand these people and the straights, sorry to be so blunt, never completely will.

That does not mean that being gay, trans or both should exempt us from criticism from straight people, that would not make any sense. But i will view straight people as unsafe when they bring our marginalization into criticizing us in spite of there being thousands of things wrong with people like Graham that do not have anything to do with whether they’re queer. Ripping on them for being closeted is not a line to cross when you’ve never been in the closet and do not understand the closet and what it means.
