I’m concerned that if a referendum was conducted, the US could heavily interfere with public opinion and spread misinformation on how good it would be to leave Canada. And if the federal government shut down the referendum, the US would use that as an excuse to use their military to “liberate” Alberta.

I don’t think Stephen Colbert was being serious when he said that quote. Mind you, all the quote sites that cite him saying that do not provide the source. Based on his persona from The Colbert Report, I imagine this was part of a joke, especially given the names he called out.
