$500 for a ticket is wild. I think the worst I have gotten (when I first started driving 30 years ago) was like $200, and that was 25 over.

God I started a new long distance deive for work recently and its half on a rural highway. Like 10 tiny towns over arpund 60 miles.
Every one…
Outside speed limit is 55 mph
Hit town, 45 mph
30 feet later, 35 mph
2 blocks in the middle, 30 mph
Back to 35 mph
35 mph feels like it lasts riiiiiight up to the edge of the town.
And half the time the first drop going in and the 55mph sign going out are obscured by overgrown trees.
Its just designed to catch people traveling the corridor.
In my experience, Moths are more likely to get in yournface and other destructive and annoying activities.
Butterflies just sort of mill about minding their own business.

211·18 hours agoThe core issue feels like the dead torrent problem.
Its distributed, so it needs to be hosted, by several locations. Which becomes probitive over time as.it becomes huge. Its also massively inefficient for what its trying to do.
At some point, its basically just one server farm somewhere hosting a glorified MySWL database that doubles as a space heater for the entire planet every time you need to add a row.

11·2 days agoIf you work from age 20 to 70, 50 years, earning $50,000/year every year, and spent none of it, on taxes, on housing, on food, on TV, on fun things. You would make 2.5 million dollars in your lifetime.

This is not a critisism on you, or Europe.
But if feels like people not from America, don’t quite get just how much land the US has (and frankly, Canada too). Especially in some things like “why don’t they all go protest their shitty leadership.” Because for some people its a 40 hour drive, or an expensive plane ticket.
Its also why we have no got “high speed rail”. Part of that is, we do have rail, but its still slow, becsuse its a lot of distance. And maintaining a high speed rail that long would be very difficult (I think we should still do it).
I live in a rural area, which is probably more comparable to your experience, it takes aroujd 45 min to an hour to get to one of several small-mid sized cities. But all are within the same state, and all of those are another 60-90 min to the nearest state border at a minimum.

5·3 days agoI have never seen anyone use the term “IQ” in any fashion who wasn’t some incel tier troll. OP seems to fram thmselfe as not, and it may be just an innocent use, but it feels like a vague tell.
Also, in my experiencr, essentially anyome who would actually be “high IQ”, does not give a shit about some baseless number to represent intelligence, because they know what constitutes intelligence has like 100 different angles. Its easy to be “smart” on dozns of areas and completely dumbshit on dozens of others.

Tangentially related a bit, but I feel like this is part of why the “no one wants to work” became a meme after COVID.
Because everything shutdown, some of these people realized just how much they were paying for day care and getting lunch and gas, and how little they made formit, that they realized they were better off just, not working that secondary income job and didn’t go back.
Man, they sure are religious for a food chain named after a sexual act.
Have you been to large cities? I bet you can drive an hour from actual Chicago and still be in the suburbs of Chicago. For example. And not cross over farm lands either.
Just doing some casual google mapsing.
Chicago to Naperville, Plainfield, and Elgin, are all roughly an hour, and its all pretty much populated area the entire trip on each. Its basically an hour in any direction to reach the edge of the Chicago suburbs.
Its 2 hours north to Milwaukee and if you stayed along the lake route it would probably be populated suburb areas all the way too.
And today I can’t stand going to Hardees becasue they are the most expensive of fast food places and all their food is GIANT SIZED" more than I can eat.
They shoukd bring back the Boss Burger from the 90s, I loved thst one, I ate them a lot.

94·3 days agoI mean, maybe, except we are way way way past the point where we can fix this. Very large numbers of humans, will die, likely in the next 20 years. From famine and fighting caused by mass migration from now unlivable areas.
Given our response level when we had time and resources and somewhat willing to work governments, vs now, its going to be a very large percentage, probably 100% within 40-50 years as it spirals and gets worse more and more rapidly.
People got all pissy during COVID when things became hard to get from shipping delays and they couldn’t go out to eat. Wait until things become hard to get because those things can no longer be manufactured and they can’t go out to eat because there is no food.
But hey, enough Doomer talk. Fidja see, Elon Musk isna Trillionaire! Everything is booming! MONEY!
