The ‘Against’ vote from western countries like Spain/ Canada/ Ireland/ Netherlands/ Germany etc. is also likely due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The recent chain of ‘Against’ started in 2022. Before that those countries would all vote ‘Abstain’ and the only ones who vote against were USA and Ukraine.
I imagine some sort of ‘enemy is both weak and strong’ type of mindset. Like the Palestinian resistance are simultaneously authoritarian tyrants that can deny food and medicine to the whole of Gaza and pathetic losers who can’t feed themselves. That might be what’s going through their heads.
Speaking of Cuba, isn’t Israel also one of the few countries alongside US that consistently votes against lifting the blockade on Cuba? I guess going by their logic US and Israel hates gays.
For me it’s that ‘x ethnic group are mostly bigots so they deserve to be genocide/ oppressed’ is that it is just good victim bad victim argument. That they only want to extend aid (or rather like the idea of extending aid) to ‘cute’ or ‘cuddly’ or ‘tragic’ victims but their solidarity will disappear (or rather their lack of solidarity will reveal itself) if you refuse to fit that mould. For example a trans person in the imperial core who refuses to allow their identity to be used to spread colonial propaganda even when they are short of funds. Or a gay indigenous person who wants to attack their colonisers.
I’m neither Igbo nor a women but seeing this pink and purplewashing makes me appreciate Things Fall Apart did not shy away from showing Igbo misogyny/ more conservative elements. I can’t say if it was good representation but I think it was important they showed it since it does help push across the idea that native misogyny etc. is not an excuse for ‘civilising’ their society.
On Okonkwo’s fundamentalism, yes it is bad. But he was also one of the only few people at the start who wanted to force the colonisers out of their land first. It can be read as a statement on how societies under attack end up with very reactionary and rigid rulers in response because they are the only ones that do something so even if you hate their actions you realise that criticising them and only them is a very chauvinistic way of analysing the situation. Kind of like how people only criticise the homophobia but not actions done by imperial countries that make them see LGBT rights as not just immoral but a security threat like ‘blackmailing their local queers into becoming informants’ or ‘painting rainbow flags on the bombs they drop onto the country’.
From where I am from the biggest complaints of Chinese tourists come from universities. Mainly on them crowding services (ex. Shuttle buses) that are meant for students.
Meanwhile Israel itself also hopes that women and queer folk who object to their actions get brutalised, if not threaten to out you. Point this out however and they will accuse you of what about ism.
What is the Resolution Symbol (the unique ID the UN uses to label documents that goes something like ‘A/RES/[number]/[number]’) of this resolution? I am trying to consolidate all the votes of similar topics but I can only find the 2023 poll on the UN website (symbol is A/RES/78/83).
Also does anyone have any suggestions on UN vote resolutions relating to anti-nazism/ racism aside for the ‘Combat glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance’ polls?
I’m thinking call them Squealer and ask them how much milk and apples they were paid to spread their propaganda.
Prince Souphanouvong from Laos?
I’m replying to your comment here because I can’t see your original comment from my instance.
I feel that the state of queer rights is actually getting worse and that Singapore as a whole is getting more reactionary. The stuff below are what got me to this conclusion.
2021
Someone made a post on reddit identifying herself as trans student (she/ her pronouns). She was barred from transitioning and that her principal told her ‘due to your presentation, you would be as disruptive to the school environment as a student with severe autism’. link
2022: I felt that Singapore’s anti-LGBTQ community got more active and aggressive in this year.
There was a school counselor who hijacked a sex ed to spread homophobic stuff. After the incident the counselor was barred from teaching sex ed. Explanation they gave was that the counselor showed un-vetted material with no acknowledgement of the homophobia. link
Then there was this protect Singapore/ families townhall organised by Jason Wong (he seems to be super-active in anti-LGBTQ movements). Police did not consider this hate speech. link
While it’s true that Section 377A was repealed in 2022, at the same time the constitution was changed to define marriage as between man and woman, completely invalidating the reason people wanted it removed. link
Around this time the Singapore politicians were whining about protecting homophobes from cancel culture. Yup. The type of stuff you expect from anti-PC comedians in the US or kid’s show writers in Japan is parroted unironically by local politicians. Instead of changing themselves they accuse LGBTQ for taking away their citizens. It’s pathetic and scary in the same way an incel school shooter is.
Also Singapore has been infiltrated by a lot of anti-LGBTQ talking heads from foreign countries. This is one article on transphobic foreign interferance
The book ‘The Aware Saga: Civil Society and Public Morality in Singapore’ also has information on how the christian right managed to ban official sex ed from ever being able to acknowledge or properly educate on gender and sexual minorities.
They constantly call LGBTQ foreign interference yet allow anti-LGBTQ talking heads into the country.
I have some questions on LGBT content in Chinese webcomics, since English-speaking yuri communities always bring this up when they bash China:
1: what exactly happened to Tamen de Gushi? The story I always hear is that the CCP banned the webcomic because they showed the characters kiss.
2: I noticed some Chinese webcomics (specifically Straight Girl Trap and I Got a Girlfriend From a Shooting Star), whenever the characters kiss, would draw white spots/ have convenient light rays covering where the lips touch. For me it feels weird since these stories already have the characters in an official romantic relationship. Why do kisses get covered even when they have no issue showing a same-sex relationship in the same comic?
