You know for poker? This is my first try at a 54 card standard deck. For the most part the cost is the value of the number card, with the exception for legendary creatures that represent the faces. Many of the colors don’t have a 10 cost card at all let alone old border so those have X in the cost instead. The Jesters are obviously the Jokers.
I don’t think I’m particularly clever, but I wasn’t able to find anyone else talking about making one of these. They have a few old products that are literally poker decks with magic backs, but I wanted to have a deck full of my favorite eras of the art of my childhood. Not just the novelty of a card back.
You could definitely build a cheaper deck by using more modern cards, but what I’d love to know is what else you’d do differently. Legends for the face cards is easy to remember, but clunky until you are familiar with who is what. Plus having to read that far down the card to tell if it’s a legend kinda gives away that you probably have face cards, but that also opens the door to bluffing. Plus I’d like to imagine most people would be flipping through their hand admiring the art.
Ultimately this deck is for an RPG my friend wants to run where the players all have their own deck of cards. So for that job it’s not as big of a deal, but if I build this thing physically I’m going to want to use it everywhere. lol

Regarding the 10 cards, I guess since there are no 10 cmc cards in old border in black I’d rather go with all X cards instead of having one 10 cmc and one X card, for consistency’s sake

Mostly from vibes, especially for the numbers. Probably half of them could change. I just had all of Homeland, Fallen Empire, Weatherlight, etc. opened on a page. I’d filter for color and just scroll. Some of them are Cards I’ve used before. Others just cards with unique or evocative art, with only a few being chosen simply because it’s the cheap option. With a few like singer vampire and shivian dragon just being historic to the colors.
I’ve half a mind to agree with you regarding the X cost ten card consistency but Decree of Annihilation falls heavily into the cards I used to play with group. That print in particular reminds me of my friend’s deck from back in the day, but for a general deck it’s probably more readable if all of them are the same.
