The saying is "eat the rich" because "kill the rich" would get you banned from social media, yet eat implies cannibalism and is thus more offensive.

TIL, but I still think it took off in the social media era in place of other phrases because it doesn’t directly suggest violence.

Something about when all else is gone and the world is in chaos, eat rhe rich because you can’t eat money. There was an original quote I can’t reacall exactly but it’s to that effect.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eat_the_Rich_(Aerosmith_song)?wprov=sfla1 was popular before social media, it’s like saying “groovy” got popular because of influencers.

Not a social media thing. The original quote goes:

Rousseau, who was also one of the people, said: ‘When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.’

Which is hilarious because Aerosmith are now the rich that we’d be eating.

lol no they aren’t. I get the impression you’re pretty inexperienced given your responses in this post.

Aerosmith, collectively, hasn’t got enough to throw at something to make it do what they want it to. They have maybe a few hundred million all put together. Bezos, Musk, even Trump who exists on credit and grifting can and do do that. It’s those kind of people (and I use the term “people” loosely) that the saying is directed at.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
