      Cats love to groom themselves and that behavior was probably seen as a sign that a cat cares a lot about their hygience. I suppose some dog breeds do that too while also being pest control but at like at that time of Islam conception most dogs are like for guarding/herding other animals.

      Of course we now know this made cats mouths have lots of bacteria so you should wash away when cats lick too just to be safe .
