The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison after being found guilty of plotting a military coup.
A panel of five Supreme Court justices handed down the sentence just hours after they had convicted the former leader.
They ruled he was guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
He’s 70, so this sentence is likely life in prison for him, unless he gets parole or some other bullshit like that, which he does not deserve. Make an example out of those who try to fuck with the democratic process or you end up like US today.
If only The Big Short ended like this as well. Well done Brazil!
“That’s very much like they tried to do with me. But they didn’t get away with it at all.”
Infuriating
As an American I find it difficult to understand how a working justice system can convict a criminal.
As a non-american posting from one of those 3rd world shitholes Trump talked about, you guys deserve way better.
Americans:
If he was American, he would’ve just gotten another term
Now do Donny 2 Inches !!
When Brazil respects democracy more than America.
We’re fucked, y’all.
We
Sounds like a 4% of world population problem.
From my perspective: So far the best SOAP that I ever watched. The episode yesterday with the gun sidestory was insane.
regardless of how you feel the united states falling to a fascist regime effects everyone on the globe the same way the industrial power of germany falling to fascism was cause for global war.
frankly, you are espousing the one of the most ignorant opinions i’ve ever heard. i’m not saying this because in some pearl clutching american. im saying this because you seem to have no idea about how cause and effect play out on a world stage.
keep feeling safe and acting like none of it matters. your country isn’t immune to what’s happened here, and it’s certainly not immune to a fascist american military. you’re no better than the 60-ish% of americans who complacently have allowed the current status quo to come to pass.
Well I’m just leaning back and grabbing my popcorn because I already watched this shitshow for over 4 years and I have to deal with it for another few years.
Trying to tackle this situation with logic or realism is clearly not working and just drives people insane so I’m doing this approach which is at least funny and not constantly depressing ^^
So basically Brazil is less of a banana republic than the USA.
See, America? That’s how you do it. Learn from Brazil.
apparently brazil’s government is more functional than USA’s
Life in prison effectively. If only we could start putting our leaders in jail for their crimes.
Brazil gets to sit at the table with Iceland on the list of countries who jailed the people responsible for almost torpedoing thier own country. (In Icelands case, it was the bankers involved in 2008s financial crisis)
The right wing is still powerful over there. The Supreme court judge who voted to acquit bolsanaro is still a member of the court. All it takes is a broken judiciary to enable fascism. And Brazil could easily go in that direction again if the fascists win control again.
mfw corrupt as hell Brazil is less corrupt than the USA.
It’s nice to see traitors held accountable for their actions. Maybe one day the US will take note.
27 years seems pretty lenient given what he was convicted of. I realise that he’ll probably never be free given his age but I don’t think that the defendent’s age should affect the sentence, especially when they still have their supporters like Bolsonaro.
The age was taken into account.
<quote>never be free</quote>
Sweet summer child…
I thought he was in his 70s? Maybe you know more about the Brazillian justice system tho.
I’m not saying anything about his age. I’m assuming, which I maybe should not, about the politics of many political systems. I’ll give it 3 years, plus/minus 3 years.
You think they will parole him or convert it to house arrest?
Idk either tbf. Maybe being pessimistic is the smart move here.
Too lenient, don’t give this guy a chance to get out.
He’s 70, most likely way out for him is a casket.
