I read through one of the Victims of Communism/YouGov collaboration polls and an equivalent one in the UK, the ones fretting about the rise of socialism these days. Now, obviously there is a lot of garbage in them, and while their own “correct” definition of socialism/communism is absolutely silly (it’s when the government does stuff!), you quickly discover that most of the people polled have no idea what those words mean, with common responses being:

    • socialism is when pro-society, social
    • socialism is compatible with capitalism
    • everyone gets paid the same
    • etc.

And I’ve seen a couple of those US street polling videos echo that result.

you quickly discover that most of the people polled have no idea what those words mean

As of 2023 among 18-34 year olds this bourgeois institute finds:

29% of 18-34s in the UK support Communism

53% of 18-34s in the UK support Socialism

39% of 18-34s asked to define Socialism define it correctly

57% of 18-34s define socialism as the government providing more services

      https://www.fraserinstitute.org/commentary/new-poll-finds-strong-support-socialism-uk

The figure for the number of people that correctly define socialism in this country is higher than you think. I don’t think these figures are something to doom about it, they’re very good actually.

Definitely nothing to doom about. Dooming like that is silly online-left junk anyway.

And even if hypothetically it was only 5% having a reasonable definition, the simple fact that 53% identify support for socialism and nearly a third identify with communism is useful and far better than one might have assumed. I went out drinking last month with random young adult strangers from a public event and of a group of 5, four of us revealed we were socialists. Wasn’t even in a particularly progressive area.

far better than one might have assumed

It’s extremely positive for our future. This is the reason we’ve seen things like anti-capitalist text get banned in schools. They KNOW that socialism is wildly popular among the next generations and it scares them. They’re willing to take the country into a black period of reaction in order to crack down on it. The turn we’re seeing towards support for farage and the far right in the media is in my opinion a pre-emptive strike driven by their fears socialists are gaining popular support. Their fears aren’t mistaken if the numbers are accurate too.
