Gene Hackman had already won an Oscar when he agreed to play Luthor. He thought it would be an easy payday without a lot of work required.

The first day of filming was Hackman and Christopher Reeve. Reeve walks in wearing the suit and Hackman realizes that he’s going to have to work hard to keep up with this unknown.
