What the fuck is this?

It was not immediately clear if the Liberals will have enough seats for a majority government. A minority government would means Carney’s party will need the support of political opponents to govern. After a narrow victory in the previous federal election, the Liberals relied on the leftwing New Democratic party to help it pass legislation. Monday’s result appeared likely to produce a similar result, with the NDP and Liberals holding enough seats to pass legislation.

You can’t run a “secures election victory” hed and then this … != “it was not immediately clear.”

At least the conservative leader saw the writing on the wall.

I want to get rid of first past the post so badly. They were supposed to. But then didn’t. It’s a flawed system. I’m glad the cons didn’t win. I didn’t consider that Trump would go dictator mode so quickly and scare the shit out of everyone.

I’m scared they’ll win in 4 years if the liberals don’t help regular people more. If they just cater to companies and the wealthy then we’re all SOL

“We were dead and buried in December. Now we are going to form a government,” David Lametti, a former Liberal Justice Minister, told CTV late on Monday. “We have turned this around thanks to Mark,” he said.

Yeah, Mark did it. For sure. Everyone saw a banker as the new leader and just went wild. No other changes can explain this reversal of fortunes.

Hello! I’m Québécois and as such happily defy all Canadian obligations. The USA gave the elections to the liberals by threatening Canada’s sovereignty. This is because the Conservatives favour the prairies, where there is a strong pro USA sentiment. Alberta’s PM Danielle Smith reminded everybody of that by conniving at Mar-a-Lago while the other provinces were trying hard to show a united front. In the meanwhile Conservative Leader Poilievre took forever to address the issue since he knew part of his base actually wants to be ’murican.

So by now Carney is PM for sure, but it’s not been called yet if it’ll be a minority or majority. I’m not excited about having a paragon of neoliberalism as federal leader (still better than Poilievre *sigh*) so I’m hoping for a minority.

A majority means they rule on their own, minority means they need to work with with some other party/parties, but that will not include the conservatives. They will have the most seats and I presume that’s what they meant by victory.

    Edit: corrected a wrong term.

Correct. The party with the most seats in parliament forms the government. However, for a bill to pass through parliament and become law, more than 50% of the MPs in the house have to approve it. If the government party has fewer than half the seats in the house, they have a more difficult time passing legislation because they need to work with other parties to get the required votes. That’s what we call a minority government, and it’s what we had last term. If we get a majority government, the leading party can pass whatever laws they want, because MPs generally vote with their party.

His party doesn’t have to win a majority of seats to be assured of forming government (aka “securing election victory”).
