  • I got pulled over in the 90’s for eating a bag of chips. I never left my lane, but every time I reached over into the passengers seat I would swerve a little.

It was late afternoon. I saw the cop behind me. I was doing the speed limit, but he was kind of close. I just figured he’d go around at some point. no lights, no siren. Finally, BULLHORN: PULL OVER.

K, so I pull over. Driver gets out and stays by the door hand on weapon, Passenger walks up to my drivers door, license and reg, yada yada. Have you been drinking? no. Why didn’t you pull over? I just did. Why didn’t you pull over back after the stoplight when we turned the lights on? What lights?

He looked back. No forward lights on.

Ohhh shit… umm he’s a trainee… Look, we pulled you over because you were swerving a bit

Ahh, sorry, I was starving points at chip bag

    oh, ok, just be careful.

  • A lot of places park people who can’t cut it doing the actual work in the project in project management roles instead of moving them on. They think, ohh they have intimate knowledge of the project and the working parts they’ll be great.

It happens a lot for regular management as well.

A properly trained, proficient project manager can get more done with less people, defuse situations before they happen and cool the jets of higher ups making unreasonable demands.

Of course, some places are just shitholes run by assholes to which none of this applies.

  • Yeah, I just watched a youtuber take apart a modern one. Found the maker and the manual for the system. Then watched some more people taking the system apart (including the one you linked)

    Neat stuff:

    • Looks like it’s <9 Khz signals (7.2khz in the one I looked up), at that frequency, you can do a replay attack using your phones speaker from 0 distance.

    • the electronics in the wheels are potted, including the battery so they’re disposable at EOL.

    • Apparently, the unlock signal is just an inverted lock signal. Easily detectable.

    • Their system has the ability to lock/unlock all carts, only the carts left in the parking lot overnight.

    • One of the features available is for them to identify and freeze a particular cart if it doesn’t go through a checkout.

  • It should be more appropriately labeled Junk Food. Everyone’s trying to make it sound official and it just ends up more vague.

If we were eating Seafood, Chicken, Beef, Vegatables, Salads and Whole Grains, we’d live longer.

In the end, we need to stay away from non-naturally occurring carbs and refrain from mixing naturally occurring carbs with tons of fat/salt to make them more palatable.

Muffins, Doughnuts, French Toast, Submarine Sandwiches, Pizza, Pasta, all have to be super portion controlled, we we just don’t seem to have that kind of willpower.

Yeah, it’s turtles greed all-the-way down.

The commercial real estate market, of all things, should be able to self-regulate. A property sitting empty is losing them tax money, get too many shuttered businesses together and the property value drops.

Few things market-correct in these late-day capitalism hellscapes, but commercial property either corrects or gets bulldozed and bought by someone who corrects (and maybe rezones) it. Sometimes it just takes a decade or so.

True, to an extent. But the price of a pound of hamburger at the grocery store has gone up relatively equal to inflation.

In a lot of places, minimum wage has raise 3x to when it originally was. But they’re paying this wage bumps off and just a handful of sales.

Commercial real estate is probably up about 3x from where it was when we were eating $4.75 bodacious bacon cheeseburgers from Roy Rogers

I think, pretty much, we’re looking at disproportionately high real estate costs and greed.

I absolutely agree with all those points and I’m glad self-check oot exists, however… When you stand in line for 10 minutes at the hardware store to get up to one of four kiosks, and something scans as an invalid UPC. Now you’re waiting for one cashier that servicing four registers. Or you’re at Target and there’s only four self checkouts open. Zero regular lanes and you’ve got a cart full of groceries You’ve just spend an hour curating. Each one of those checkouts is able to handle about two bags.
