She was from New Delhi, and had a potential fiancé back in India. As I understood it, the culture of arranged marriage has moderated, and your family will find a partner for you only if you don’t find one for yourself by a certain point. He was the one, if she didn’t pick somebody else.

So, after a less than a year of dating, her job moved to Europe, and she wanted me to marry her so we could stay together. I wasn’t convinced that it wasn’t just a case of cold feet about the guy at home, so I said no. One of the hardest decisions I’ve made, and sometimes I still second-guess it.

I figured it out a while back. It’s a definitional mismatch. While you and I think about entry level as the level at which we enter a career, the companies think of entry level as the level at which somebody enters the company. They ditched any notion of social responsibility in the form of cultivating new workers long ago.

The trouble, I think, is that even Reddit wasn’t Reddit (as we think of it now) for years and years. Recall that when it started, there were no subreddits, it was all one feed. The niche subreddits branched off of more general ones after participation grew and critical mass developed, the subreddit topics driven by what users were talking about.

It doesn’t work the other way around. You can create a community to house a topic that people want to talk about; you can’t make people interested in a topic just by creating a community. I think we’ve suffered by premature fissioning into a thousand niche communities, each with 1 or 2 people talking to themselves.

Tactical voting may be the correct way to participate in FPTP elections, but unfortunately still doesn’t lead to a good outcome, just like leaping out the window of a burning skyscraper to avoid being burned alive is the better choice.

FYI, Pew Research found that only 85% of Biden voters showed up in 2024. If all eligible voters had shown up, though, Harris would have lost with 45%.

It’s not the case. We had WISC-TV, the CBS affiliate, on channel 3 in our area. I seem to recall that one could switch between channel 2 and channel 3 on the Atari RF modulators, and later, VCRs could switch between channel 3 and channel 4. I think they used 2 and 3 because those were the first two channels, and the FCC wouldn’t allow two adjacent channels in the same area, so one of the two would always be unused for everybody. (Oddly, there was no TV channel 1.)
