Been stewing at it for longer than you have, buddy.

You’re not correcting anything, dude.

The entire point here is that the bots are being disrespectful.

They’re not trying to do that in particular, but on a site like lemmy the same content might be linked a dozen different ways:

It’s not necessarily the big companies themselves doing it? But, there’s a push right now to scrape as much data as possible to feed the training of the AI models, and if your business model is entirely based on selling that data you don’t really care who you’re going to piss off. So, in turn these new scraper bots basically behave in the same way that attack bots do where they’ll be behind VPNs and switch IPs and stuff if you block them.

Ordinary search crawlers are throttled and they do stuff like respect your robots.txt and sitemap.xml (directives that tell the crawler what links to scan or not and how frequently). These naive crawlers hit everything at max speed, and on a content-heavy site like lemmy that can easily take out a server.

They’re simply not censoring it. The BBC already got thrashed for this bullshit.

This is a recipe for blindly hosting CSAM.

I end up with issues with it because I do a lot of graphic design which means I have a lot of fonts. So, it ends up rebuilding its subtitle font cache for little reason every time I start it. Can at least disable that though.

We have card payments at the pumps, and the garbage can thing was very much a weird NYC thing.

Lemmy also didn’t have support for federation when Hexbear first popped up, and the Hexbear devs were a couple weeks away from finishing de-forking their older codebase so they could hop back on the main, federation-capable Lemmy codebase when the Reddit API exodus happened. Awesome timing.

I’m professionally used to looking closely at actual photos. 😛
Issues are mostly because someone took this with heavy zoom on a phone camera. Means it compressed the perspective and the AI cleanup became obvious.

That’s a hedge obscuring it, phones do AI stuff to increase crispness and it also garbles text, and that sign’s on the other side of the street.
It’s someone’s silly meme car.

Gets us on the other end too as we do newsletters and other web work for small orgs, so our poor little web servers basically get DDOS’d by the scanners when we send out a newsletter with a bunch of backlinks.

Your email service’s scanner might, because some of them go through every link and check what’s on the page.

Critical mass on any social media platform turns it into a shitshow?

I was giggling at just the 📝 reply when I originally saw the thread.
Hexbear user since a couple days of their launch before federation was a thing. The instances you’re knocking are older than every other instance, and the defeds were typically preemptive to the point where people on other instances usually have no fucking clue what they’re talking about.
Always makes this stuff bewildering, but we’ll be here with you or not.
